Principal Software Engineer & Architect

For twenty years I've built software that holds up in the real world: apps for crews in the oil field, the Bible App for millions of people, and now platforms for non-profits and ministries.

The route

Chapter 1 · 2006 to 2007

1. Telecom & Ecommerce

I started at Dobson Communications, a wireless carrier, building the e-commerce and self-service portals its customers used to manage their own accounts.

Then AT&T bought Dobson. Rather than become part of AT&T, I decided it was time to try something different.

Chapter 2 · 2007 to 2014

2. Tech at Oil & Gas

Something different turned out to be oil and gas. TEKsystems placed me at Devon Energy as a contractor building GIS systems, and Devon hired me full time in 2008. I stayed six more years, working my way up to Lead Developer.

I got to work on many projects, but I spent a large part of my time on custom mapping systems and early iOS apps that brought real-time data to the people working out in the field.

Chapter 3 · 2014 to 2024

3. Bible Apps

In 2014 I joined Life.Church as a Software Engineer on YouVersion, the team behind the Bible App. I stayed nearly a decade and advanced to a Principal Engineer.

I was part of the team that designed and scaled high-volume distributed backend systems behind the Bible App and Bible Lite. I also worked on teams that built and shipped mobile apps to millions of people around the world. During my tenure, I helped shape YouVersion's mobile and data strategies and worked on automated CI/CD pipelines that let a global product release with confidence.

Over time, more of the job became people. I mentored engineers across teams and worked to raise the bar on architecture and code quality.

Chapter 4 · 2024 to now

4. Non-profits & Ministries

In April 2024 I became co-owner of Sowers, a product and engineering company that serves ministries, nonprofits and mission-driven organizations.

I handle the technical side of Sowers: technology consulting, rapid prototyping, and building web and mobile apps. Three projects define this chapter so far.

Bosca

bosca.io · content engine

I architected and built Bosca, Sowers' content engine. It brings a CMS, messaging, analytics and recommendations together in one system.

Passion Equip

passionequip.com · for Passion City Church

Passion City Church contracted Sowers to help build Passion Equip, its discipleship and teaching platform, built on Bosca.

BibleProject

Sowers contract · mobile

Supported BibleProject's mobile team on Kotlin Multiplatform, mostly as a technical advisor helping the team explore possibilities.

Chapter 5 · Unwritten

The next chapter

I'm looking for a senior or principal engineering role at a small to medium-sized, mission-driven organization, preferably in faith tech. A team with a clear identity, a clear purpose, and room to build software that helps people engage with Scripture and grow in their faith.
